People are demanding answers and justice, especially because it seems that serious failures on behalf of the island’s utility company caused the devastation and fatalities.

Federal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are researching the possible causes of the Maui wildfire. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, video evidence shows downed power lines igniting dry brush, which quickly roared into a massive wildfire due to strong winds from Hurricane Dora. The same winds that allowed the fire to spread rapidly are the same winds that caused what appear to be poorly maintained power lines to contact the dry brush.
While investigations are continuing, it appears that The Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), which oversees Maui Electric, could be liable for much of the destruction if the final investigation concludes that downed power lines in the area had not been properly maintained. Also, HECO has stated that power to the Lahaina region was not shut off in response to high wind warnings in the area. Utility companies should use emergency protocols to shut off power grids to prevent wildfires, but it seems that HECO had no such procedures in place and did not use them.
